EUGENE CHADBOURNE is an American improvisor and songwriter residing in Greensboro, North Carolina. He began recording and self-releasing music in the mid 70’s and has racked up an impressive 4 decades of truly unique albums and live performances. His avant-melting pot fuses such disparate genres as country, free jazz, blue grass, blues, psychedelic rock, and noise in a manner that can be unconventionally playful and humorous, skillful and sincere, creatively annoying or simultaneously all of the above. He has performed and/or recorded with John Zorn, Fred Frith, Derek Bailey, Han Bennink, Carla Bley Band, Paul Lovens, Camper Van Beethoven, Jello Biafra, They Might Be Giants, Sun City Girls, Violent Femmes, Kevin Blechdom, Jimmy Carl Black and many others. Chadbourne is the inventor of the legendary “electric rake”, an instrument made with a guitar pick-up and an ordinary lawn rake.

Master real-time tape loopist and LAFMS member JOSEPH HAMMER cites receiving more than one AM radio station at the same time and an episode of ’70s TV show Land of the Giants (the one where astronauts use tape loops to thwart alien tyrants) as a couple of his musical influences. His unique utilization of consumer audio technology, tape loops, samplers and analog synthesizers yields compelling and varied musical expressions. We’re talking multi-dimensional audio collage to the point of plunderphonic hypnosis. Since 1980 he has performed and recorded with Points of Friction, Dinosaurs With Horns, Solid Eye, Steaming Coils, Debt of Nature, Kitten Sparkles (with Don Bolles) and Dimmer (with Thomas Dimuzio), among others.

ROB MAGILL is a multi-instrumentalist from Ojai, CA. who expands rock, jazz, and classical music ideas in a semi-improvisational, composed fashion with ensembles that vary in size and sound. This evening he’ll be accompanied by Brett Childs, Dustin Emery and Ben Widmer on guitar, bass and drums and operate within free-jazz, post-hardcore, modern classical and rock idioms.
