Interface Design II is the second iteration of a site-specific sound sculpture by Erin Demastes. The first Interface Design was installed at Calarts in a traditional white box gallery and played with the juxtaposition of what we expect synthesizers to look like versus what they can look like while also fostering play and curiosity and losing the typical user-friendly design that encourages efficiency and ease (and often boredom).

Interface Design II is also a site-specific sound sculpture and pinpoints similar sentiments as Interface Design I. Although this iteration includes the idea of a synthesizer beyond the typical box-with-buttons design like Interface Design I, it also expands to incorporate other types of technology by displaying the insides of various commodities we are used to seeing neatly packaged and revealing what is hidden to consumers. This project will also foster play and curiosity while simultaneously encouraging rebellion against major tech corporations as we peek inside their carefully packaged products to subvert their neatly designed purposes.

The full installation will be up from August 1st – August 4th and partial installation will remain up for the rest of August. This residency will also feature a workshop centered around teaching attendees how to build the technology used in the piece and an evening performances in the installation. CMOS Square Wave Workshop – August 4th

In this workshop, we will go into the design and hacking capabilities of the 40106 CMOS chip. Each person will design and assemble their own circuits and solder them to circuit boards to create a portable synth. This class is open to students of any level! We can go into breadboard setup and soldering, so please sign up if you’re interested even if you’ve never done electronics before. Workshop will be taught by composer and sound artist Erin Demastes.

Depending on the student’s capabilities, we can go in depth into breadboard setup, have a soldering workshop, and even go as far as to making our own enclosure. Please fill out the google doc accordingly, so I am able to cater to the class.

Erin Demastes uses repurposed technology and everyday objects to explore sonic phenomena related to acoustics, resonance, electricity, and magnetism. She fosters a sense of play and discovery in both her performances and fixed media work. Erin also specializes in improvised music, and her current work involves performing on synthesizers, laptops, toys, found objects, and homemade instruments and electronics. She recently received an M.F.A. in Experimental Sound Practices and Integrated Media from California Institute of the Arts, and before coming to Los Angeles, Erin worked as a jazz and classical pianist, composer, and arranger for 10 years in the New Orleans area.

$55 includes all the components and materials needed to build the synth.
