Weird Winds Night: Demastes / Mooney / Jacobs / Barbier / Sturm

$Free as always, bring your friends!

Weird Winds Night. A night of handmade and hacked wind instruments curated by Erin Demastes and sponsored by the wulf.

Performances by Bryan Jacobs (SD), Tom Sturm, Liam Mooney, Matt Barbier, and Erin Demastes.

Liam Mooney is a composer, performer, and instrument maker whose work involves the misuse of familiar objects and materials, the slow unfolding of simple processes, and the free exploration of sound worlds. Often (but not always), he creates wind instruments using vacuum cleaners as a means of moving large quantities of air.

Matt Barbier is an LA based trombonist and composer focused on experimental intonation, noise, and the physical processes of his instrument.

Composer, performer, and sound artist, Bryan Jacobs’ work focuses on interactions between live performers, mechanical instruments and computers. His pieces are often theatrical in nature, pitting blabber-mouthed fanciful showoffs against timid reluctants. The sounds are playfully organized and many times mimic patterns found in human dialogue. Hand-build electromechanical instruments controlled by microcontrollers bridge acoustic and electroacoutic sound worlds. These instruments live dual lives as time-based concert works and non-time-based gallery works. Jacobs, a Guggenheim Fellow, has been lucky enough to have his music and sound art presented at a number of festivals around the world.

Tom B Sturm is a Los Angeles based sound artist and instrument builder whose absurd, speculative creations critique and reimagine the relationship between humans and technology. Their work explores different facets of their own history and identity. Drawing from experiences building and repairing electronics, furniture, and computers, they approach created dilemmas by making custom devices. These new instruments stretch and explore rules and traditions as an extension to their passion for orchestration and interface design. They use artificial intelligence, generative algorithms, and circuit bending to develop new methods of exploring technology from a personal perspective. In constructing, documenting, and sharing these inventions and discoveries, Tom seeks to empower others to create their own devices.
