Mark Hosler and Jon Leidecker (WOBBLY)

Mark Hosler is a founding member of the American audio visual collage group Negativland. Since 1980 Negativland have been creating records, video, visual art works, radio, and live performance, using appropriated sound, image and text. Taken mostly from corporately owned mass culture, Negativland re-arranges these found bits and pieces to make them say and suggest things that they never intended to. In doing this kind of cultural archaeology and “culture jamming” (a term they coined way back in 1984), Negativland have been sued twice for copyright infringement.

Mark takes a break from his Negativland duties to perform live and solo using a performance set-up built around various homemade one-of-a-kind electronic noise making devices (including two of Negativland’s original “Boopers”). In these performances Mark creates a noisy and musical soundscape performance with devices that are intentionally unstable analog feedback boxes. Sometimes sounding like insane, alien, electronic insects fighting each other, the Boopers create a non-linear dynamic “living” system of sound for Mark to interact with that ends up being a performance dynamic where the musician is a fellow collaborator with the devices, encouraged to converse instead of merely transmit. The Boopers used in this show go way back to 1975, when Negativland founding member David Wills created the first one, adding multiple transistors to a simple FM radio receiver, and sending its output back into its input. Various knobs control the amount of signal through the transistors, but the sound that emerges remains wildly variable, and incredibly fun to listen to. Using multiple Boopers (all based on Wills’s original design) and other homemade electronics as primary sound sources, Mark manipulates and augments the raw sound sources into a choral rainforest of pure electronic ear candy, erasing any easy distinction between the machine and the human. He might also rock out a little bit, too.

WOBBLY / Jon Leidecker has been engaged with the medium of electronic music since the mid 1980’s, with an emphasis on live performance and collaboration. Early works utilized sonic collage & musical appropriation, growing out of a series of appearances on Negativland’s live-mix radio program Over The Edge — improvising with recorded sounds to produce music which inherently resists the act of being recorded. Recent work investigates the history and musical aesthetics implied by the physics of acoustic and electrical feedback, research into the technology and creative workflow required for immersive sound diffusion (including five years of work as a member of the engineering team for Dolby’s 3D sound format Atmos), and the use of mobile devices and their built-in microphones as cybernetic improvising partners. In 2008, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona commissioned the podcast ‘Variations’, a nine hour musicological tour through the history of collage & the practice of ‘sampling’ through the 20th century — charting how the definition of composition changed, as the site of the ‘finished work’ migrated from written musical notation to the capturable (and increasingly manipulable) sonic recording. Wobbly’s live and studio collaborations include work with Negativland, Dieter Moebius, Tim Story, Matmos, People Like Us, Fred Frith, Zeena Parkins, Carl Stone, John Oswald, Thomas Dimuzio, Huun-Huur-Tu, and Sagan. In 2015 he inherited Negativland’s long-running Over The Edge radio collage program, which continues to be broadcast twice a month on Berkeley’s KPFA FM.

Everything Is Terrible! is the internet sensation video collective responsible for some of this millennium’s most intriguing and mind melting videos. From Yogi Ogi Dogi, the creepy yoga farmer, to Cat Massage to Pubic Hair Dying to the Yellow Dino who hunts pedophiles; for 7 years EIT! has mined the absurd VHS universe for the best/worst bits. Every video is original and fantastic media art that creates a window into America’s hidden past and future! Not only has EIT! managed to make thousands of new web videos everyday, but they’ve also made 6 features including their 2012 remake of The Holy Mountain using nearly 3,000 dog-related clips.

Everything Is Terrible!’s daily postings, features, and insane live shows have been hailed by Wired, MTV, Fox, Time, BoingBoing, Buzzfeed, WFMU, Videogum, BUST, The Onion, Chicago Tribune, Tiny Mix Tapes, Paste, Jezebel and many more. The CBC deemed it simply ‘The best site ever.’ The Chicago Tribune has done several features, calling EIT!’s work “…sublime comedy.” Paste did a little something, summing up EIT!’s mission aptly: “For a couple years now, the cultural historians over at Everything Is Terrible! have worked hard to dredge up all the groan-inducing infomercials, workout videos, PSAs and otherwise terrible footage from the ’80s and ’90s that they could find.” All Things Considered did a story on EIT! and their pursuit of every copy of Jerry Maguire in the world. One of The Onion’s numerous features declared 2Everything 2Terrible 2! to be a “postmodern masterwork,” LA Weekly called EIT! the “Bruce Conner for the information age,” and Time Magazine put them on their 50 Best Websites 2013 list. On top of the press’s love affair with EIT!, celebrities have also come out in droves to praise their work. This long list includes Conan O’Brien, Reggie Watts, Erykah Badu, Snoop Dog/Lion, Mike Judge, Tim and Eric, Deadmau5, Wil Wheaton, Peter Serafinowicz, Jake Foglenest, Nick Offerman, Dan Harman, Scott Adist, and so many more.
