Passing through walls hurts human beings, they get sick from it,
but we have no choice.
It’s all one world. Now to the walls.
The walls are a part of you.
One either knows that, or one doesn’t; but it’s the same for everyone
except for small children. There aren’t any walls for them.
The airy sky has taken its place leaning against the wall.
It is like a prayer to what is empty.
And what is empty turns its face to us
and whispers:
“I am not empty, I am open.”
-excerpt from “Vermeer,” a poem by Tomas Tranströmer
What is the sound of being together?
What is the sound of the commons?
What is the sound of refusal?
What is the sound of listening?
EMPTY/OPEN is an exploration of the subjects of noise and silence as they are constituted formally through sound as well as immaterially through relations within and between audiences and the practice of listening. Over the course of this week long residency, Los Angeles artist Nikita Gale will be developing a collection of multichannel hybrid sound works and listening exercises accompanied by new original text works and video vignettes. These works will continue to build upon Gale’s interest in relationships between sound and architecture — specifically walls and elements that define space through a means of obstruction. EMPTY/OPEN considers the potential of sound to produce social and spatial relations with the understanding that silence is not an empty space, but an open one with the potential to shift the relationships between audience, environment, and the practice of listening.
